If it looks like I’m a long way off the ground, it’s because I am. 😅 🧗‍♂️ I’m no @alexhonnold but I sure felt like it today as I did my first via ferrata climb here in Engelberg, Swizterland. “Do one thing a day that scares you” - Yep, I’ll give that checkbox a big tick today. ✅ If you like heights, highly recommend. If you don’t, there’s a cable car nearby and they serve Zucchini soup at the top. 🤗 Have a great week. JL P.s The real MVP is @jackson.groves for lugging his camera up 700m off the ground and snapping this whilst holding on with one hand.The provision of your time is critical, spend it freely and use it wisely. - JL // sunsets and mountain running, the dream combo. . . 📸: @jackson.grovesMy heart rate has been elevated for days, and the pressure in my head comes and goes like the waves watched weeks ago. It’s never overbearing but it’s enough to make the sleeping bag more challenging to leave. For months we’ve talked about Laila Peak, for the week we’ve waited for a summit window. Stories have walked past on tired legs, warnings have greeted us with a cuppa tea. The Karakoram demands respect and to be standing upright amongst these mountains is a privilege. An ambitious start into my mountaineering journey has led to many learnings, insights, and reflections. To be bold, is to be patient. Before any further bold next steps, slow progressions must be made. I need a new word because ‘wild’ doesn’t suffice. The last couple weeks have epitomised adventure and I’m grateful to share it with two great mates and now climbing partners, @jackson.groves and @off_the_atlas. I lost nearly every game of cards we played at base camp, showered once, cherished cold lake swims at base camp, enjoyed trying new foods (that I’ll tell you more about later) and ultimately, challenged myself in a new domain and made it back safely.

Thank you to @thegrayl for supporting this expedition, we’ve got plenty to share.

I approach everything thinking I can win because it shows me the fastest way to lose. If I’m going to lose, I don’t want to lose slowly. It’s just like sitting the table after dinner and learning the rules of a new card game. No-one listens till the game begins. We learn best by doing. Experience solidifies and accelerates knowledge in a way that theory could only dream of. So here I am sitting foolish and brash. So this week, I’ve been advised against: Against doing what’s unconventional. Against doing what sells best. Against saying things that make it confusing for others to understand. I’m trying to do things earlier than the timeline suggests. I’m trying to make urgency a friend, yet not rush. I’m trying things, simply to prove my own theories. And sometimes, I run hot, and it all blows up. Sometimes, I miss the mark, fall short, or end up lost. Sometimes, I end up laughing, other times crying. Often, I go to bed thinking what in the world am I doing. Often, I sit in the shower a little too long, wondering how it all comes together. Often, I walk home calling friends hoping for the smallest drop of wisdom. So, here I am. A little a little stubborn, and lacking a little convention. I’m not looking for perfect. I’m looking for what’s on the other side of perfect, the mess that makes us a human. I think that’s where I sit, trying to make something beautiful of it.
